Product Review: Vital Greens

This formulation is quite interesting. It is designed to curb the appetite (with artichoke powder, green tea and other ingredients) while giving you some protein (from peas mostly) and nutrients from a variety of green botanicals. The greens are heavy in spirulina with a few grasses thrown in too. It has the ratio of spirulina to grass that I like — meaning it’s mostly spirulina. Other greens and herbs of note include spinach powder, ginseng, rosehips, astragalus, milk thistle, rosemary extract and mushroom extract. Plus, there is a hefty dose of apple powder, which is very good for digestion and liver cleansing (plus it tastes good). I’ve never seen a mixture with this much apple powder in it. The only drawback is the large amount of bulking ingredients (all of which have some function in the mix, but they are mostly bulking). These include the pea protein, lecithin, and some flaxseed meal. Overall, this is a high-end formulation for a very reasonable price of $4.36 per ounce.

Compare with Berry Green for a different formulation at a slightly higher price.

Review: Perfect Food

Like many of the green drinks, Perfect Food is heavy on the grasses, which I’ve often mentioned are good ingredients, but not necessarily the best. Thankfully, this product also contains a significant amount of spirulina and sea veggies to make it a bit more robust than some of the other grass-heavy green products. The veggie juices included (beet, carrot, broccoli, etc.) are not in huge quantities, but it’s nice that they are included. The filler in this product is the rice bran solubles, which is not a super nutritious choice, but better than some products, like guar gum. At $4.24 per ounce, it’s not a bad value, but compare with Delicious Greens, which is in the same price range, but a different formula, or Green Vibrance, which has a similar (but more robust) formula and a better price tag.

Manufacturer’s Description

The whole foods found in Perfect Food provide vitamins and minerals as nature intended, but it goes beyond just that. Perfect Food also delivers naturally occurring cofactors and synergistic compounds by utilizing concentrates and juices instead of extracts and isolates. Other formulas often load their products with non-greens and fillers. While many of these non-greens are important and have a definite nutritional benefit, no other type of food source provides the nutritional benefit of green foods. That is why Perfect Food Super Green Formula Powder contains over 8000mg of greens per serving.

Review: Sun Is Shining

This is terrific formulation by one of the industry’s best formulators, Dr. Jameth Sheridan. This particular formulation is almost identical to Sheridan’s own product Vitamineral Green but is a bit more expensive. Actually, almost twice the price. It’s a great product, both in the quality of the formulation (no fillers!) and in the quality of the ingredients.

Manufacturer’s Description

Sun Is Shining boasts an incredible array of nutrient-dense, mineral-rich superfoods including powdered vegetables, algae, and aquatic vegetables, as well as a highly-advanced probiotic (friendly bacteria) formula. This product was developed exclusively for Sunfood Nutrition by one of the world’s leading superfood authorities, Dr. Jameth Sheridan (N.D.). Sun Is Shining has been formulated to provide you and your family with the vitamins, minerals, enzymes, probiotics, polysaccharides, and protein required to build strong bones, healthy muscles, better digestion, and much needed alkalinity in a world where we are exposed to an abnormal amount of toxins.

Review: Amazing Grass Green Superfood

Amazing Grass is not one of the most robust formulas on the market. It consists mostly of grasses, which are good, but should not dominate a green drink mixture because they don’t offer as much nutrition as some other botanicals. In other words, they are among the less expensive green ingredients that formulators use. Maca, which is also in this mixture, is a good botanical, but also not one of the most rich in nutrients and provides some bulking for the buck. On the positive side, the product does include spinach powder, spirulina and chlorella in lesser quantities to improve the nutrient value of the product. It’s not a bad mixture, and the price is consistent with its quality at only $2.82 per ounce, which makes it one of the least expensive green drinks on the market. Compare this with Dr. Shultze’s Green Super Food and decide which is best for you. Personally, I would lean toward Shultze’s formulation.

Manufacturer’s Description

Green SuperFood is blended to perfection in a delicious tasting powder that mixes well with juice, water or your favorite beverage. One serving gives you the antioxidant equivalent of 7 servings of fruits and vegetables and helps you hit your daily quota.

A full spectrum of alkalizing green superfoods, antioxidant rich fruits, and support herbs unite with Acai and Maca to provide a powerful dose of whole food nutrition. Complete with pre & probiotics and digestive enzymes to ensure rapid nutrient absorption and healthy digestion.

Review: Delicious Greens 8000

A good mixture with healthy amounts of greens (spirulina, chlorella and barley grass), vegetable powders (carrot, broccoli, spinach and others), and anti-oxidants (fruits, beet root, milk thistle, pomegranate, green tea and more). The formula is very similar to Antioxidant Natural Greens (see link and compare), which has more flax meal and is, consequently, less expensive. The flax provides Omega-3 fatty acids, but also creates more bulk in the mixture, which lowers the manufacturing cost. Overall, this is a good mixture, but it seems a bit expensive for what you get.

Delicious GREENS 8000 is an easy mixing, great tasting and energizing “phyto-nutrient” powder mix loaded with certified organic, whole foods and plant extracts. Review: Prime Directive

This formulation is different than most others, in that it’s focus is on both nutrition and amino acids. Hence, the formula contains some greens (mostly from spirulina and grasses), but also includes a great number of aminos from various sources (nuts, beans, molasses, alfalfa seeds, etc.). These types of ingredients are more expensive, hence the hefty price tag. You need to decide if the mixture is worthwhile for you, or if you’d be better off purchasing nuts and molasses and adding them to a more cost-effective formulation.

Manufacturer’s Description

Prime Directive, through the Flora Ferm™ process, has fermented a variety of 22 Certified Organic Wholefoods. It is important to note that each ingredient is a whole food and not extracts, parts of plants or synthetic chemicals dressed up as vitamins. Review: Ferm Plus Gluten Free

This is essentially a gluten-free version of Prime Directive, which is formulated for nutrition and amino acids. Like the other product, this one is quite expensive and you might find it a better option to purchase a good gluten-free green drink and add your own nuts and amino acids. This requires a bit more work, so it’s for each person to decide.

Green Drink Reviews: Living Fuel

This product has a lot of fiber and filler for being such a high-priced contender. While it can be argued that chia seeds provide fatty acids, that peas and brown rice have protein, and that lecithin is good for digestion and elimination…the truth is, these are all low-priced fillers for those who know about green drink formulation. The greens in this product (mostly barley grass, spirulina and some spinach, kale, and other veggie powders) do not make up the foundation of the formulation. Sweetened with Stevia.

Green Drink Reviews: Berry Green

This product, while on the expensive side, is almost completely without fillers of any kind. It contains just a bit of brown rice solids, but otherwise, it’s pure functional. It features spinach and other healthy veggie powders (kale, broccoli, cabbage and Brussels sprouts), plus fruit powders like blueberry, cranberry, pomegranate and papaya. This explains the price point of the product; it contains high-end ingredients and pure vegetable and fruit powders. Overall, This is an excellent formulation if a bit expensive at $5.51 per ounce.

Compare this toVitamineral Green, which also has no fillers, but uses a different philosophy in formulation — using more grasses and spirulina instead of the veggies and fruits in Berry Green. Both are good formulations.

Manufacturer’s Description

It’s hard to imagine eating 20 different organic greens and fruits every day. Even if you went to the organic market each morning, you might have trouble finding them all, much less finding the time to eat them all. Green Drink Reviews: Antioxidant Natural Greens

Antioxidant Greens has a unique approach to green drinks. It is formulated to provide everything you need — omega-3 fatty acids (from flax), green drink nutrients (from land and sea vegetables), and antioxidants (from fruits and green tea). Where most green drinks fall short in the antioxidant side of the equation, Antioxidant Natural Greens actually does well enough in each of these areas that you might not need much else in your basic nutrition foundation. Many drinks don’t attempt this because the taste is rather difficult to get right — but this product is flavored (with natural flavoring and stevia for sweetener) to overcome the taste barrier. You’ll have to try it to see if you like the taste — not everyone will. If you do, this is a great value at under $3 per ounce.

If you want a similar formulation without the flax (provides fatty acids but is also used as filler), then compare this with Delicious Greens 8000.

Manufacturer’s Description

Antioxidant Omega 3 Greens contains a variety of high ORAC value whole foods, providing you with optimal levels of antioxidants that would be difficult to get on your own. Antioxidant Omega 3 Greens also contains 2600mg of Organic Flax & Organic Flax Lignans per serving, rich in ALA Omega 3 fatty acids.

Pros

Excellent formulation with plenty of Omega-3s, antioxidants, and nutrients from greens. The greens focus on spirulina, chlorella, grasses and veggie powders. The antioxidants come from a variety of sources, including green tea and fruit powders. Great additions include pomegranate powder, milk thistle seed extract, tumeric and red wine extract. Flax meal is cold processed to keep it fresh. Excellent price!

Cons

Not everyone will like the flavors and you probably can’t do much to modify it (other than using different juices with the berry flavor). Antioxidant Natural Greens is not gluten free.

Green Drink Reviews: Boku Super Food

Boku has an excellent mixture of land vegetables (including maca root, nettles, and nopal cactus), algaes, sea vegetables and probiotics, with a focus on maca and kelp. Boku is not bad tasting, probably because of the maca, flax meal and a bit of carob root thrown in for good taste (literally). Boku also contains a simple fruit blend that may or may not be worthwhile in a green drink, depending on whether or not you also take an antioxidant juice drink. Boku is a lot more expensive than other formulations at nearly $6 per ounce.

Manufacturer’s Description

Boku Super Food is not just a green food, it is a super food complex with benefits from essential fatty acids from flax seed meal, hormonal balance properties from Maca root, and phytonutrients from an array of fruits (which are also a great source of anti-oxidants) plus probiotics and enzymes. Green Drink Reviews: New Greens

New Greens is a formula that includes a little of everything, with a focus on algaes and alfalfa. Land veggies include carrot, spinach, tomato, kale, broccoli and others. Some special herbal additions worth highlighting include royal jelly, pollen, green tea, milk thistle, tumeric, and ginko biloba. It has a small amount of fibrous meal in the form of flaxseed meal, apple pectin, and brown rice solids. Unfortunately, it also includes some guar gum, but not enough to complain about. Not everyone will like the taste, which is flavored with mint and stevia, so it’s sweet and minty with a hint of freshly cut grass. It weighs in at $3.78 per ounce.

Manufacturer’s Description

Green Drink Reviews: Dr. Shulze’s Super Food

The most basic formula I found was Dr. Shulze’s Super Food. This product is a simple mixture of the most basic ingredients with nothing noteworthy to help it stand out from the crowd. The land vegetables are minimal and the product focuses on spirulina and chlorella as its key ingredients — giving it an especially horrible taste . The good news is that it has the lowest price point of the group — at only $2.43 per ounce. I suppose you can take the money you save and buy the flavoring ingredients you’ll need to disguise taste of this product.

Recently, Dr. Shulze came out with a deluxe formula, called Super Food Plus, which has a much more competitive list of ingredients, including grasses, seaweed, beet and spinach leaf, orange peel and lemon peels. Unfortunately, he also added a bit of nutritional yeast, which is rich in nutrients, but many people cannot eat it due to bloating and gastric problems. Shulze claims that the yeast in this product is heated to destroy the “yeast” effect, but not the nutrients. You can try it out and be the judge. The product is still among the least expensive at $2.57 per ounce and this makes is a great value, even though it’s not the most robust formulation.

Manufacturer’s Description

Green Drink Reviews: Enerfood

This formulation is quite cost effective. It is high in Spirulina and Chlorella, two very nutritive ingredients that don’t cost a fortune. The formula uses nutritional yeast (a kind of brewer’s yeast) in the place of a filler to bulk-up the mix. Some people will prefer this to the flaxseed meal, rice solids or apple pectin used by other formulators. Some won’t. The yeast is said to be non-active, so it does not cause bloating and other reactions and it’s highly nutritional. Other highlights are dendelion, kelp (great nutrition for a great price) and beet root.

Manufacturer’s Description

Enerfood is highly digestible and is absorbed very quickly into your body. It provides a dense and highly concentrated absorbable nutrition in a powdered form. That means when you mix it with fluids, the vitamin and mineral-rich molecules can be easily processed by your body’s digestive system. Green Drink Reviews: Green Vibrance

An excellent formulation of spirulina, grasses and vegetable powders. Includes a nice selection of “extra botanicals” including bee pollen, ginko biloba, green tea extract, and Astragalus. Contains a slightly high amount of filler/fibrous ingredients, but that’s offset by an excellent price tag. Also has a fruit blend, probiotic cultures and enzymes. The mango powder, cayenne, and ginger are excellent additions. Overall, this is an excellent formulation at a reasonable price.

Good cost-benefit ratio and a very well thought-out formulation.

Cons

Some of the special herbs in this formulation may be herbs that you purchase separately, and so may be duplicating your purchase with this formulation. Many, however, are well chosen, in that you cannot get too much of them (green tea, pollen, vitamin E, ginger and cayenne for example). Green Drink Reviews: Macro Greens

The product called Miracle Greens was among the first on the market and is still among the best. Its land veggies include beets, cactus, barley grass, and carrot. It has large doses of herbs, including ginger, horsetail, suma, astragalus, Echinacea, milk thistle and others. It includes a few fruits (berries, cintrus, acerola cherries) and offers green tea, watercress, royal jelly, and aloe vera as special ingredients. It has the usual algaes and contains a lot of fibrous meal, which is a mixture of lecithin, apple pectin and flax seed meal, but overall, it’s among my favorites and costs $4.00 per ounce.

Pros

Good overall value. Strong in special herbs like green tea, milk thistle and Echinacea (if this is what you want). Includes royal jelly and some fruits. Formula is strong in anti-oxidants for a green drink.

Cons

You may not want or need many of the special herbs in this product (like Echinacea and milk thistle), if you make a practice of purchasing them separately. These raise the price tag of this formulation, whereas more nutrient-rich botanicals, like kelp, could have been used to raise the value without raising the price. Still, if you don’t purchase these special herbs separately, then this formulation may be perfect for you.
