Review: Amazing Grass Green Superfood

UPDATED Dec 2010
Amazing Grass is not one of the most robust formulas on the market but it’s one of the best values you’ll find for a basic (but good quality) green superfood formula. It consists mostly of grasses, followed by spirulina, alfalfa, spinach and chlorella. Maca, which is also in this mixture, is a great botanical from Peru that provides natural energy and general healing qualities of an adaptogenic herb. It does bulk-up the mixture a bit, but if you’re going to bulk-up a green drink, Maca is about the best choice you can make (this product does contain flax seed meal and apple pectin, but in fairly small quantities, so I don’t consider them to be bulking this product). The apple pectin is there just to act as a natural flowing agent to help prevent caking. Overall, the greens in this mixture dominate and make this a very green superfood…and the price is excellent at only $2.82 per ounce, which makes it one of the least expensive green drinks on the market, and possibly the reason it’s one of the most popular. Compare with Mighty Greens which is also dominant in grasses but has a higher price-tag.

  1. Amazing Grass is the best I have ever tasted and feel AMAZING! I was talking to my nutritionist that thinks your comments about maca is way off, maca is unbelievable and not cheap. Between this being the only “certified” organic option with branded products like Sambazon acai and no soy lecithin fillers. I am all in! It tastes better than the others and the guys at Whole Foods Markets said the price is reasonable because Amazing Grass is grower direct.

  2. It is a decent formula at a very good price. I may have been a little harsh on it, since there are other formulations like it that cost more. But I still prefer the more robust formulations.

As for Maca, you need to read what I say about it in my other articles, such as:

    How to Read the Labels
How to Get more From Your Green Drink

In short, I love maca. I just don’t think it’s one of the more nutrient-rich botanicals and it is not as expensive as the “good stuff” like kelp and spirulina. Of course, maca comes in different qualities from different regions of Peru. Some is said to contain high amounts of heavy metals, while other maca is dried in such a way that it become very harsh on the stomach. The best stuff is more expensive, of course.

Thanks for your comments and vote of confidence in Amazing Grass.

  3. Thanks for all of the reviews on this site – they have been very helpful! This is one of the best tasting drinks I’ve tried. I can easily drink 4 daily in between meals, and definitely notice a difference in the way I feel and the look of my skin. I’m not sure how the quality of the ingredients stack up to the other brands, but I’m much more likely to drink this than the others so I feel it is worth it. I actually look forward to drinking this, and it makes me feel great!

  4. You should mention that the grasses in this product are much more nutritious than conventionally-grown grasses – including fresh, tray-grown wheat grass. I don’t know if they measure up to the algaes, but they shouldn’t be compared to other grasses.

  5. I find the label just a little misleading on this product. When read quickly it appears it contains enough to fulfill recommended 5-9 servings of fruits and veggies per serving. However upon closer scrutiny it ‘helps achieve’ re. 5-9 servings. Anybody know just how much we are getting per serving (scoop)?

  6. “However upon closer scrutiny it ‘helps achieve’ re. 5-9 servings. Anybody know just how much we are getting per serving (scoop)?”

    Great question.

  7. I love this grass. It has a sweet “green” taste – not minty exactly but fresh-tasting. When I’m using this more regularly than not (and it’s been 2 years on and off) I have more energy, my digestion seems more efficient, and it seems to help me with appetite control. Very happy with this brand for the price.

  8. Has anyone had any adverse reactions from consuming this product? I have had horrific stomach-cramping and nausea but not sure if it’s related to the green powder or not. Thanks :-)

  9. Chris, it probably IS related to the green powder, but not because it’s a bad product. Rather, it’s quite likely that your body is reacting to the drastic change that this represents in your diet. I suggest reducing the dose until you find an amount that does not cause the cramps…then increase slowly over time. good luck!

  10. I too have had adverse stomach reactions since starting to take this product. It may just be my body adjusting to it, but it has been about two months since I started taking it. Has anyone else had this problem? It mostly makes me very bloated and gassy with some abdominal pain as well.

  11. I have to say this product causes yeast infections to occur.. I NEVER get yeast infections until i started using this product. After 2 months of use i got a very bad yeast infection tried everything to get rid of it until i finally figured the only thing different i did was add this to my diet and low and behold the infection was gone!. a month later i said well let me try it again just to see and within exactly the same time frame 2 months i got an awful yeast infection and again quickly stopped taking it and it was gone,, i have tested myself three times and it is definatley the cause of water retention and bloat in my body not to mention yeast infections.. Its ashame because it did help my nails and hair grow but causes too many side effects.

  12. The Amazing Grass products cause me to break out in a rash and I had some digestive problems (bloating & diarrhea) after a few days on the product. Symptoms didn’t show up until about day 2-3. I had hoped they were just a detox reaction but it looks to be more of an allergic reaction. Love the products & the bars but looks like they are not an option for me.

  13. Deb, looking at the ingredients label (see image in article above), I don’t see anything that stands out as a common culprit for allergies. If you have this reaction to this product, I’m guessing you’d have the same reaction to any product that contains grasses (which is the majority of green drinks). If you DO have better results with a different product, please return here and let us know. Good luck!

  14. I have been using the Ammazing Grass products for a week now and I just started having a lot of pain in most of my joints. I do have artritus but this is like having a flu with body aches too but I have no fever. Has anyone experienced this before with this product?
